Morag Myerscough talk

“Morag Myerscough has produced an eclectic – and sometimes eccentric – body of work that is frequently unclassifiable but always offers a high level of engagement. She combines formal graphic design methodologies (typography, image making, colour theory) with highly individualist craft skills."

Myerscough believes it is very important how people feel in places and if you can make them smile and feel happy that is one of the best outcomes.

Geo/graphic Mapping by Alison Barnes

I have been looking at the artist Alison Barnes, she has focused

This map charts all instances of brick and tile decoration throughout New Basford. At first glance the area can seem to be somewhat featureless, with row upon row of red brick terraced houses. However, this map reveals a huge range of subtle architectural detail. The decoration is so prevalent within residential areas that it delineates the roads. Areas with no decoration are predominantly commercial. The type of decoration rarely seemed to correlate to the size of house, though there is a prevalence of colourful ceramic tiles in the south west corner.

Alison has developed work that probed beneath the surface of New Basford, attempting to represent a sense of place. Her methodology was that of the anthropologist, seeking out signs and interventions of a low-tech, personal and vernacular nature. These were recorded and used to develop a series of maps charting non-traditional elements such as graffiti, decorative brick features and memories. The maps (approx 900mm square) were produced on translucent stock that enabled two different maps to be overlaid and further conclusions drawn.

This map focuses on the graffiti in the area. All readable instances, 2094 of graffiti in the area were mapped, Alison has been transposed onto the map of the area exactly as written. The outline of the roads has been removed to let the graffiti visually define the space. Deductions can be made from this map about the frequency and type of graffiti and its position within the space. For example, tagging is more prevalent in areas that are less residential, and some roads that have houses that front directly onto the street have a disproportionately large amount of graffiti. Subtler things also reveal themselves, such as sunnier sides of the streets attracting more graffiti, and concentrations around street corners.

This map puts the residents at the centre of the work, and the oral history research was gained over the course of four interviews with older residents who had either lived in the area all their lives, or as a child. I endeavoured not to lead the conversation, simply explaining the project and outlining what I wanted them to talk about—particular places, buildings or people they remembered. All participants had a wealth of evocative memories, both personal and general. It became apparent that some places and characters appeared in several of the participants’ stories, which suggests that the notion that stories can become a part of a place’s very fabric is a very real one.

Emotion

What emotions do we as humans feel all the way through our lives. How do we move on from them, how do encourage, ignore or concur them? How does each emotion build us into the people we are today. I want to find these questions out.. and then would it be possible to make a Map of Emotion? I have made this short video listing all the emotions we face..

Mapping height

In computer graphics, a heightmap or heightfield is a raster image used to store values, such as surface elevation data, for display in 3D computer graphics. A heightmap can be used in bump mapping to calculate where this 3D data would create shadow in a material, in displacement mapping to displace the actual geometric position of points over the textured surface, or for terrain where the heightmap is converted into a 3D mesh.

A flat earth

Jennifer Maravillas maps

Using Google Maps Jennifer Maravills has created these brilliant detailed maps.  It gives her the ability to see the land we inhabit from above. Enabling her to  zoom in and out, viewing the lives of our cities are apparent in the purposes we assign to the land and the histories we decide. She sees the world from above, the patterns of divided spaces give voice to a specific areas and their histories. Jennifer believes each city is a creature with a personality defined by geography, past decisions and biological systems.

'At the heart are the heights in which we reflect on the past and the beauty of the present. Any one moment in which thousands of our neighbors are climbing the hill that millions have previously. It is an urban environment built on exploring the nature of ourselves and the world.'

Jennifer Maravillas

I really love her technique of separating the hole country into cities. Which she divides into separate colours. This is forming a detailed pattern, showing an arial view as seen on Google maps or out of a plane window. Her work reminds me of my past plane rides, looking out of the window at the world which always looks like patchwork. All the different shades of green and grey, It could be suggested that Jennifer has taken this concept and made it her own and added popping colour.
