Desire Paths

A desire path is a path developed by erosion caused by footfall. The path usually represents the shortest or most easily navigated route between an origin and destination. The width and amount of erosion of the line represents the amount of demand.

I found this concept of making my own path very interesting. Through research i have found that that this type of walking through parks etc makes an marks on the world that weren't meant to be there. Its an indent on the world that was started by people and was then repeated by others walking over the same spot. This path is created by the realisation of one person taking a short cut through a over grown area and it then being repeated causing the grass to die and create a natural path. These paths are separate from registered paths and give a sense of how people break from the conventional paths.

For my EMP I am exploring how I can tell a narrative through illustrating maps. I want to record a journey through this method. I found this very interesting to my project as these idents/ desire paths are psychical examples of people taking an alternitve route to get to a desination quicker or to dicover a new destination. I be will on the look out for these desire paths, I am interested in how an excursion from the expected paths can lead to a discovery. This repeating act of people walking enough times over the same spot could create any path you like. This would create a map for another person to follow, by following the route they took and therefore making the indent more indented.

I want to consider how i can involve this into my EMP. This could be the answer to self discovery when on a walk which would map into a narrative. [[posterous-content:pid___0]]
