EMP - I want to recreate this book but with a different subject matter

Journeys of Frodo- An Atlas of J.R.R.Tolkien's, The Lord of the Rings by Barbara Strachey

The book comprises 51 two-colour maps (a general map of Middle-earth and 50 numbered maps) at various scales, all based on the original The Lord of the Rings maps drawn by Christopher Tolkien from his father's sketches. Each map is on a right-hand page in landscape format and depicts physical features in black and contour lines in red. Routes taken by characters on roads and paths are shown in dashed black and red; routes off-road are in red only. Arrows show the direction of travel and dates are listed in red. Scales along the top and left of each map show the distance east/west (mainly east) and north/south (mainly south) from Bag End. At the bottom of each map is a scale showing miles to the inch and an indication of the lunar phase or phases visible at the dates given.

Each numbered map is accompanied by a description on the facing left-hand page, in which Strachey describes the portion of the route indicated, often justifying her topographical decisions with quotes from the book. In some cases she points out discrepancies in the topographical descriptions, occasionally for instance altering the course of a road or a river on the grounds that it would otherwise be inconsistent with Tolkien's other descriptions of the terrain.

This book has inspired me!

I purchased this book at an old second hand book store on Winton high street, Bournemouth and what a buy.

I have always been a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, so when I saw this book I couldn't believe my eyes. What a brilliant idea, bringing all the maps together between two covers containing Frodo's impressive journey.

This book accuratly records his journey with a detailed symbol guide, mapped distance, record of date and happenings of that situation. This book is in order of the written happenings making it easy to navagate Frodo's joureny.

I love this collection of maps, It brings a sense of distance and to see the fictional world of Lord of the Rings in map form on paper is quite exciting. Admitadly when I first picked up the book I flicked firstly to the content page to find the map of Mordor. When I foundthe map of Mordor I realised a purchase was in order.

This collection of maps has inspired me to maybe take the same root with my project! I was searching for a way to show my birds journey to the South and this approch could be perfect, expeshally as I will have a short story accompanying the maps illustrations. Like in the 'Journeys of Frodo' I could publish the map of one side of the double spread book and the story on the facing page.

I want to experiement further with this idea...
