After all of my research on pop-out maps and origami birds, I thought it would be very appropriate to add a 3D element to my book. I have decided to defiantly add the feature to my book of a pop-out map; I want it to be a wow factor at the end of my book.
I have been researching methods of how I can make my map pop! But first lets talk about the design of the map. I had thought up two options for what information my map could display.
First was to display all the birds in the UK and the second was to display all the loved Hikes around the UK. I felt like I was naturally drawn to the bird idea first, as I wanted to tackle it first. I could imagine how the design would look, which I always take as a positive.
Here are my development designs of my map:
These images above made the final image below. This map shows some of the most well known birds that habitat Britain. Have chosen to keep to the same colour scheme as my book, this keeps the design correspondent. I am proud of this map, I think it has charm and gives you simple information relating to the book. This map is acting as an extension of the book, as some of the information shown on the map isn't in the book. I have like in the book chosen to keep the birds with hats on, the hats on the map act as a key. Each hat has a different colour or style which is specified along the sides with the name of the bird that particular hat is on.
I have pretty much come to the way that I will fold the map into the book quickly. I want the map to be folded so when the book is opened the map will open up fully. I have brought the London pop-out map, I want to copy the way this map is folded as it does exactly what I want mine to do. I have researched the fold that would create this effect. I have found it quite easy to replicate this pop-out map. I will have to next experiment with what would be the best paper to fold a map with, making sure its not too thick or thin. I am very happy with the result, at the moment I have only experimented with it on a small scale in my mock up book but I think larger it woill work better and will have a stronger impact!
